Product Description
Good capacity, a tilt table, two-wheel design and reliable tracking makes this 10-inch from Delta a great starter bandsaw for the home woodworker.
Max height under the blade guide is 7 inches, but we didn’t have a thick chunk of rock maple handy to see if this saw could handle a resaw of that magnitude. Pine’s no problem, and for the harder woods, we think a high-end blade would do a fine job. We like the rack-and-pinion height adjustment and found we could easily make minute height changes with it. The 10-inch throat will meet just about all the needs of a beginning or intermediate woodworker, and the table tilt is a nice feature, too, with 45 degrees to the right and 3 degrees left. The tilt mechanism is easy to use, and squaring up is fast and simple to do.
If you’re considering this band saw, you’ve likely also looked at a three-wheel design because of the extra throat capacity, and the three-wheelers do have that advantage. But for the most part, you’ll get much longer blade life with this and other two-wheel models, since the blade isn’t wearing against a third surface. In that department, this Delta has upper and lower tire brushes that not only prolong blade life but improve the blade tracking, too.
Changing blades isn’t any worse on this Delta than just about any other band saw, and you’re able to use 1/8-, ¼- and 3/8-inch blades (length is 72-1/2 inches) for a nice range of capabilities.
The saw, mounted on its open base, stands about 5 feet high and weighs just shy of 100 pounds. As for assembly, give yourself a few hours, and you’ll have a sturdy, dependable saw in your shop.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
DELTA BS150LS 5.6 Amp 10-Inch 1/2-Horsepower Open Stand Woodworking Band Saw, 120-Volt 1-Phase Review
I ordered one of these saws last week based on mostly positive reviews. I was really looking forward to this addition to my shop and happy about what seemed like good value. I have to say that I was horrified when it actually arrived. The cabinet components are made of plastic. Mine arrived with all of the cabinet pieces broken or cracked. There were even shards of broken cabinet lying in the bottom of the shipping box. The plastic is obviously extremely brittle.
My main complaint is the upper blade guide. Mine came snapped in half in the box. Made of cast aluminum, it's a little larger in diameter than a pencil. The 90 degree angle where the guide post becomes the blade guide is all one casting, very thin material and sure to break. Also, the clamp that holds the guide post to the body of the saw is very flexy. This means that the that the upper guide twists easily with relatively little force.
All in all, I would say that this saw is a toy, not designed to last at all. I sent mine back and replaced it with a Harbor Freight saw for $20 more, on sale. The bigger saw has no plastic parts. It has a solid steel guide post. It has twice the horse power. It also has virtually the same footprint, so it doesn't take up any more space than the Delta 10".
