2013 Everlast PowerMTS 200 Mig Tig Stick 200a Multi Process Welder Review

About two months ago I started shopping for a MIG welder. I compared Miller, Lincoln and Thermal Arc. I started to really like the Victor Thermal Arc MIG/TIG/Stick welders but then started to cost it out with the optional equipment and the price started to spiral.

Although I started looking for a MIG unit, I realized that being able to TIG and Stick weld would allow me to take every process wherever I needed it. I hit upon the Everlast MTS welder and started to do some comparisons. I was really impressed on how full featured each of the welding disciplines are with this one welder.

The MIG welder has burn back control, metal construction for the wire feed, wave forms (inductance control) for the arc, post flow adjustment and spool gun support.

The Stick welder has arc force control and is capable of putting out a whopping 175A.

The TIG welder has pre flow, post flow, up slope, and down slope!

The welder arrived with everything I needed - stick holder, mig gun, tig torch, work clamp, gas regulator and foot pedal.

I've been welding with it pretty much every day since it arrived. The arc is smooth and I really like the wave forms and the ability to save custom settings.

This 6061 bar is just what it says it is. I checked the density (water displacement + a scale) of a piece and it matches with the 6061 density range perfectly. The bar is oversized in all dimensions, which is good, unless you're looking to not have to machine it down to 0.500". If that's the case, this probably isn't what you want.

The TiAlN coating resists heat better than TiN and TiCN coatings, increasing tool life and performance. End mills are designed to remove material and create multi-dimensional shapes and profiles. They have cutting edges along the outside diameter and flutes that remove chips from the cutting area and allow cooling fluids to enter. I have a couple of rotary tools and enjoy carving with them, however, the majority of burrs and cutters for them leave a lot to be desired so I decided to give some carbide ball end mills a try. Best decision I ever made with regard to these tools. The end mills I like are 4 flute and small to very small. These cutters give an extraordinary cut quality compared to what are generally sold as rotary tool cutters. These are extremely sharp, precise and cut cleaner than anything else. Of course this is not what these mills are meant for, which is a pity. If more people knew of these cutters, wood engravers all over would be a lot happier.

I have been able to draw detailed organic and geometric shapes and replicate them very cleanly with these cutters, either freehand or using a mini router base with my Proxxon. The level of precision is really good because these cutters don't try to wander too much. Having four sharp flutes and a round tip put these cutters in a class of their own for wood engraving/carving.

JET 321373 BD-920N 9-Inch Swing-by-20-Inch between Centers 3/4-Horsepower Benchtop Lathe, 115-Volt 1-Phase Review

I was looking for a benchtop lathe with a little more grunt and capability than the smaller, hobby-type machines, and without spending a ton of money. The lathe arrived well crated and covered with preservative. Plan on using up a roll of paper towels getting this stuff off. Once mounted on my workbench, I checked the spindle for runout with a coax indicator and also checked the tailstock alignment. Both were on the money. I obtained a live center, drill chuck, and a set of tool holders locally, and was off and running. First project was a steering tube for an outboard motor, that required a 12" length of aluminum stock to be turned to 7/8" OD and a 14-TPI thread cut. Both operations went extrememly well. Vibration is very low and this machine is solid.

Some gripes: When cutting threads coarser than 14 TPI, the end gearing arrangement prevents the access cover from being closed. This I see as a potential safety issue. I would like to see a power cross feed added, even if it added to the cost of the machine. Finally, I would like to see the inside of the tailstock taper keyed for the drill-chuck arbor.

All said, this is a lot of lathe for the money. I see from other reviews that some people aren't happy, but my experience has been positive so far. I've done this stuff for a living on a $20,000 toolroom lathe and this little JET does many things just as well. It is a small machine with limited power, but should serve most home machinists very well when used within its limitations.
