Okay, kids, what do health care and blind/low vision aids have in common? They are both wildly overpriced because the sellers know the buyers aren't consumers; they are government agencies, insurance companies, etc. The flaw of capitalism is that items aren't necessarily priced relative to their inherent value but rather in proportion tn the pocketbooks of the buyers. Granted, health care has less of an excuse since their "customers" are nearly limitless especially in our Fast Food Natio while producers of low vision products have a limited customer base. But still....I bought this out of my own pocket. At such an insanely high price I was shocked by the cheap feel. Even my old Optelec CRT 14 incher was better built. Basically, we have a bolted on Acer 24 inch monitor. I could live with that, but the resolution on the monitor is 1280 x 720! We are calling this HD? That was HD ten years ago--for TV's. It was HD for computers probably in the waning days of DOS. Why wouldn't the highest resolution monitor possible go with this machine? How about a 1920 x 1200 monitor, for example? Those extra pixels would enhance everything the highly touted camera has to offer.
I might see if I can find a replacement monitor--but they have to have holes for the screws to go in and I'm not sure monitors are sold that way.
On the plus side, you do get the beauty of real print. I am shocked that anyone with normal vision reads e-readers. No screen has yet equaled the resolution of the printed page--including Apple's Retina Display.
But that might change shortly. It might even happen in a couple weeks when the Google Nexus 10 inch tablet come out--with 2560 x 1600 resolution and 300 pixels per inch. Now THAT is HD. And the price? $399. You don't need your blind state agency to buy it for you because it's priced for humans. Anyone with low vision can adjust the fonts and get basically what this machine offers. Bottom line: CCTV's might be a dying breed. But that's all the more reason why the absolute highest standards of quality should go into them--especially at a price that dwarfs an iMac. Come on Magnisight, do not go gentle into that good night!
Oh, and I know people use CCTV's to read mail and pill bottles too--but for that the cheapest model possible would work.
