These horizontal swing-out centrifuges each hold up to eight 4- to 15-mL tubes. Swing-out design allows samples to have a straight-line separation for more accurate results and fewer re-spins.

The Straight 8-3K features variable speed to 3,000 rpm, 1,400 × g, a 1- to 30-min timer, and a built-in tachometer. It measures 14" H × 15 1/2" L × 12 1/2" W and weighs 33 lb.

The Straight 8-5K features variable speed to 5,000 rpm, 4,000 × g, a 1- to 60-min timer, and touchpad time and speed control with a 4-character digital display. It measures 14 1/4" H × 15 1/2" L × 13 3/4" W and weighs 38 lb. Both units feature a 0-rpm interlocking lid (stays locked until rotor stops), wide mouth for easy cleanup, and rubber feet to prevent walking during operation.

Straight-8(tm) 3K Centrifuge Review

I own the Straight 8-3K centrifuge and have been very happy with it. It is easy to clean, fairly lightweight (~30 lbs), and very quiet. It has a brushless motor so requires little to no maintenance. The tubes go full horizontal during a run. The digital tachometer is very accurate, although I can't say the same for the timer. The recommended max RPM is 3050 (1460g) but there is a 5% tolerance. I have run the unit several times at 3200 RPM (1660 g) and have never had a problem.
Cons: appearance is somewhat old-fashioned (paint color looks old). Unit is a little on the large side (height). I have also been unable to find the 50mL accessory rotor, although all I use are 15mL tubes anyway.

Overall I am very pleased with the 8-3K.
