I picked this unit up in order to surveil a wooded area. It turns out to be very useful for all sorts of things. (We'll get to that...)

I originally had the x50 Thermal Eye, and the difference is staggering. Basically this unit is three times a sensitive, to the point that you can see clouds, airplains in the ski, people is wooded areas, etc.

Pros:

- Compact, very small
- Light weight
- Can be mounted to trip pod
- NTSC or PAL versions available
- Operates off of two AA batteries (Alkaline, Lithium, OR NiMH[!])
--Longest operation is off of Energizer AA Lithium batteries

Cons:

- Eye strain, it's very small internal screen leads to eye straing, similar to Night Vision Equipment
- It EATS Alkaline batteries (maybe 2 hours of use), so you really need to have a stash of NiMH (2400mAh type) or Lithium AA batteries
- Accessories for this item area difficult to find (video cable, external power adapater)
- If using NiMH batteries, the external adapater WILL NOT charge the batteries
- The video cable is PROPRIETARY, meaning you HAVE to purches the L3 cable. This is somewhat odd in a day and age where mini-HDMI is now common (It's a BNC connector... an using an adapter you can display the output on an older TV.)

Usage:

- First off: you will not miss a person... if you are surveiling an area of about a 460M arc and there is ANY form of life out there, you'll see it. People and animial show up like nonthing else, except perhaphs the warm engine block of a car. It's just like the movies...

- Second: The unit is also useful for checking a variety of side tasks: Walk around the inside of a home with it and check ever light fixture and even outlet (while turned of an cooled down) and you can look for eletrical issues. If there is heat coming from your eletrical pannel or any of the outlets, and nothing is plugged in, you should have it looked it.

- Third: The unit is also useful for looking at a home an determining heat loss (from inside to outside - from the outside), or heat/cold intrusion around windows an doors. Now you can actually determine where you are lossing heat or cold from!

I'm giving this rating 4 start due to the resticted field of view in the eye peice, the fact that none of their other models indicate a larger field of view or are compared to this one (such as the x100 or the x200), and that for the significant price it does not include any of the accessories...

The unit, unlike the other versions, does come with a hard case.
