The Jancy Slugger titanium nitride (TiN) coated, high-speed steel (HSS) annular cutter set includes 11 annular cutters with 1" depth and a 3/4" shank, with one each of the following cutter diameters: 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 15/16", 1" and 1-1/16". The cutters create through holes as deep as 1" in a range of materials, with best performance in mild steel and structural steel. The set also includes a pilot pin for 7/16" to 1/2" cutter diameters, a pilot pin for 9/16" to 1-1/16" cutter diameters, and a case.

High-speed steel (HSS) is a general-purpose steel that offers toughness and shock resistance, and is compatible with a variety of materials. The TiN coating combines stability at high temperatures with hardness for wear protection, increasing tool life and performance compared to uncoated tools. The cutting edges can be resharpened for longer tool life. Each cutter has a 3/4" shank to accommodate the 3/4" arbor of a magnetic drill or to connect to a drill press with an arbor assembly (sold separately).

The good news: The TiN-coated cutters are nothing short of amazing -- at least the smaller ones. The 1/2 inch one cut through inch-thick A-36 steel with no grief, and left six holes that were as smoth as you could imagine. I also used the 7/16 and 9/16 cutters (on .120 wall tube), and they cut through the thinner metal like butter.

The bad news: It looks like Jancy's / Fein's quality assurance isn't what it should be: I tried to use the 1 1/16" cutter just yesterday, and it was too big to fit into the 3/4" chuck of my Jancy Holemaker II magnetic drill.

I'm a home hobbyist, so my work isn't all that time-sensitive. I would've been REALLY upset if I'd had to depend on the cutters to get time-sensitive work (ie., something I was getting paid to do on time / budget) done.

For the price, and considering that I bought the cutters specifically because they're Made in USA, I have to admit being more than a little disappointed.
