General International 25-300M1 14-Inch by 30-Inch Wood Lathe Review

I bought this lathe three months after General-International quietly closed their office in Montreal. G-I has a U.S. Affiliate in Murfreesboro, TN. The 438 pound lathe is manufactured in Taiwan to extremely high standards. It ships in two containers; the stand in one carton and lathe boxed and palletized for the second. The task to unpackage and transfer the lathe onto the stand in the shop required a motorcycle lift and large wood blocks to get it high enough; thankfully I have one. This machine is my fifth wood lathe to work with since 2001. The instruction manual is fairly well written making installation quick and easy. I have written Amazon large items team about the inferior packaging and I intend to write G-I and send photos of how it looked on arrival. On arrival by truck line it looked damaged and had busted the pallet. Fortunately the only damage was a squished lampshade that I was able to bend back to round shape with ease. A stronger thicker pallet is needed. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy it. It is now July 2013 and I am truly glad I bought this. I wish I could move it to my indoor craft shop at the Ozark Folk Center but I think that is a pipe dream.

The 440C stainless steel round rod has an unpolished (mill) surface, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A276 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The 440C stainless steel grade is wear resistant, offers mild corrosion resistance, and can be heat treated to very high hardness. It can attain higher hardness than 440A and 440B when in the hardened condition. A martensitic stainless steel, 440C is magnetic.

Stainless steel is an iron alloy with resistance to staining and rusting in many environments where steel would typically degrade. The chemical composition of each grade creates a grain structure that falls into one of five classes: austenitic, duplex, ferritic, martensitic, and precipitation hardening. The austenitic class contains the most formable, weldable, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel grades, but they cannot be heat treated. The duplex class offers high resistance to pitting and chloride stress corrosion cracking. Duplex grades are heat treatable and roughly twice as strong as austenitic grades. The ferritic class contains moderately formable and corrosion-resistant grades compared to other stainless steel classes, but they cannot be heat treated.
