Printrbot Simple 3D Printer Kit, PLA Filament, 1.75mm Ubis Hot End, 4" x 4" x 4" Build Volume Review

I have to admit, I usually do not leave any reviews. This is my first. I noticed that this printer didn't have any yet, and thought I should contribute.

I have had my printer 1 week now and I am still just blown away by the machine. It has some great engineering behind it. It is very simple, no nonsense little 3D printer, and it works very well. Assembly took about an hour, I could put a second one together in 15 minutes or less. The software is excellent and easy to use. My very first print came out great. I thought it was perfect at the time, but since then I have tweaked the settings a little, and wow! I am just amazed by the level of detail it can achieve. My son just printed a 2" tall frankenstein bust, You can see every scratch, scar, and stitch, every hair on his head, his pupils, little wrinkles in his shirt, etc.... Pictures apparently do not do 3D prints justice, because the quality is about 10X better than I was expecting, especially from the cheapest 3d printer kit available right now.

Printrbot Assembled Simple 3D Printer, PLA Filament, 1.75mm Ubis Hot End, 4" x 4" x 4" Build Volume Review

The Printrbot Simple is a fantastic little machine at an even better price. It uses all of the same core parts as the more expensive Printrbots - the jr and the Plus - meaning, the electronics board, hot end, and other components are the same. It's just smaller (4x4x4 build volume) and is "minimalistic" like Printrbot says. Brook Drumm, CEO of Printrbot, is gaining a great reputation for innovation, design, and affordability - all while maintaining awesome quality prints. For being less than 2 years old as a company, Printrbot is on the rise - and has struck gold with this amazing little Printer.

The kit version of the Simple is indeed an even better price, but if you are hesitant at all in building something (not "mechanically inclined"), spend the extra money and buy it assembled. You'll be printing the same day you get it, and will be pleased with your decision. Plus it will be at your door in 2 days with Prime!

Bottom line: Printrbot is a company you can trust building 3D printers you will love. Highly, highly recommended.

Product Description

The PRM-9000 includes the same two-inch (50.8 mm) pancake Geiger detector tube that is the gold-standard for surveying areas for potentially harmful ionizing radiation levels and for detecting radioactive contamination of packages, items, equipment and people. The instrument is suitable for regulatory inspections, and for the detection, measurement and monitoring of broad spectrum, low energy radionuclides, including Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). The two-line, alphanumeric display supports both English and Japanese languages promoting ease-of-use and concise measurement. The display is backlit to support low-light conditions. Using only one key, users can scroll through several screens that display present, average, maximum and minimum measurements in uR/hr, mR/hr, uSv/hr, Counts per Second (CPS) or Counts per Minute (CPM). The PRM-9000 instrument not only records the maximum radiation measured, but also displays the time and date at which the maximum occurred. Battery life is over 4-years under normal conditions from a single, readily-available, 9-volt lithium battery that is user-installable without soldering. Standard alkaline 9-volt batteries available everywhere provide over 2-years of life under normal conditions. With over 100K bytes of data logging memory included, the PRM-9000 can autonomously store up to 91,466 minutes or hours of time-stamped measurements. These measurements can then be uploaded to a PC in CSV format for analysis. A user-settable dose rate alarm sounds an audible alert when the measured radiation level exceeds that of the alarm level setting. Designed by Mazur Instruments and manufactured in the USA, the PRM-9000 includes abundant I/O options including support for headphones, external speakers, external power and PC/Mac USB data exchange (requires optional 3.5mm to USB adapter cable). Minimum energy sensitivity alpha (2.5 MeV), beta (50 keV), gamma/X rays (10 keV). Gamma sensitivity: 3,500 CPM/mR/hr (Cs-137).

Mazur Instruments PRM-9000 Geiger Counter and Nuclear Radiation Contamination Detector and Monitor, 0.001 to 125 mR/hr Range, +/-10 Percent Accuracy Review

This is my review of the Mazur PRM-9000 that actually arrived 3 days early. First, I want to say I am NOT affiliated with any company in this review, and I am a hobbyist regarding the instruments mentioned. The instruments I personally own are: Mazur-PRM 8000, Mazur PRM-9000, SE International Inspector EXP+, and a calibrated and certified Victoreen CD-V-715 1B. I have owned the PRM-8000 since February 2012 and am completely satisfied with its quality.

I am going to compare the Mazur PRM-9000 to the Inspector EXP+ in this review, since they have the same type 1.75" (effective diameter) Geiger-Mueller tube, and should produce similar results. The strongest point for me regarding the Mazur brand of instruments is the ability to LOG data without being tethered to any other device. Just select "Data Logging", in my case I set the interval to "Minute" and "Start" the process when I want to begin, and "Stop" when I am finished. This can be used for very long measurements since it is capable of storing 91,466 minutes or hours' worth of data depending on your settings. Each stored data point contains the date, time, and counts per minute. This can be transferred to a computer with a free program called TeraTerm, and graphed in Excel. My other brand detectors are incapable of doing this since they have no internal memory. The Mazur instruments can also be set to monitor for a preset duration of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, or 90 minutes, and will give you your data in whichever unit you specify, uR/hr, mR/hr, uS/hr, CPS, or CPM, already calculated for you in the counts or dose rate you specify, no further calculations are necessary. This is not possible with the Inspector, in which you set your time duration, and it gives you total counts for the time set, then you do the math to get your CPM or CPS, the timer does not function in any other mode than "Total / Timer", so no direct readout of CPM, CPS, mR/hr, or uS/hr is possible during a timed reading. If you need to monitor a project for longer than 90 minutes that is not a problem, just reset the counters in the PRM-9000, and let it run for hours, weeks, or months, and it will continue to update the minimum, maximum, average, and current counts. This would be a good time to use the data logging feature I mentioned above. I am not familiar with any other units that have the minimum, maximum, average, and time of maximum information displayed. The Mazur units I own are very well built, have backlit displays, and the user interface is second to none. They are very easy to use and interpret the data they output. Another thing that is a big plus is the time the unit can run on a single 9V battery. The battery life is stated to be 20,150 HOURS or 2.3 YEARS at normal background levels, this is a really nice feature since the unit is designed to be always on. The specifications on my PRM-8000 are for 28,000 HOURS on a single 9V alkaline battery, and I don't doubt the factory's estimate on the battery life is correct. I did recently change my battery on the PRM-8000, but I run it at significantly higher levels as you will see in the tests below, thus the shorter battery life. I still got 8 MONTHS out of a single battery. Being always on is a great feature, since it is always monitoring background, and its alarm will alert you if the background radiation level exceeds your set point. Maximum is constantly updated with the time it occurred as long as the unit is on.

I ran a few comparison tests with the Mazur PRM-9000 and the Inspector EXP+, all timed tests were 10 minutes long unless otherwise noted. The first test was with both units sitting next to each other on a wooden countertop reading background radiation only. The PRM-9000 logged 24,081 counts for 29.7 CPM and the Inspector EXP+ logged 25,169 counts for 31.0 CPM. This was over a 13.5 hour period (810 minutes). The second test was with a Uranium doped glass bead at the same distance from each Geiger-Mueller tube. The PRM-9000 yielded 3149 counts, for 314.9 CPM, and the EXP+ logged 3119 counts for 311.9 CPM. The third test is an interesting one, it started raining so I did a 10 minute count of my countertop and a paper towel with both units, and then went out and saturated the towel with rain from the hood of my car. The background count with the PRM-9000 was 29 CPM, and the rain soaked paper towel is 92.4 CPM yielding a count of 63.4 CPM for the rain alone, and the EXP+ logged 30 CPM for background, and 104.3 for the wet paper towel, yielding a count of 74.3 for the rain alone. The GM tubes were kept at equal distances from the test subject, and both counts were made at the same time. This is a nice test to see how they work in a real scenario of testing for contamination in food or water. Do I need to worry that a local nuclear power plant has released contaminants? Perhaps we are getting the remains from a nuclear disaster far away?? No, it is just naturally occurring Radon and its progeny in the atmosphere being brought down and concentrated by the rain, and I am sure a few contaminants on the hood itself. This does show that both units are very capable of testing for contaminants. With the Mazur PRM-9000 I was able to set up data logging and let it continue to collect data for the next 6 hours, and I was able to see on a graph the rate that the sample decayed back to nothing more than background radiation (about 2.5 hours). The fourth test I did was with a small Depression glass vase, it has a base the same size as the sensors, so it was easy to locate the sensors in the same place on the base of the vase. The PRM-9000 logged 27,056 counts, for 2705.6 CPM. The Inspector EXP+ logged 28,620 counts, for 2862.0 CPM. The fifth and last test in this review is from a "ball pitcher" with orange glaze of the same type found on Fiesta Ware. This is a relatively "hot" piece, and I wanted to see how the detectors would handle a more active test target. The PRM-9000 logged 153,980 counts, for 15,398 CPM, and the EXP+ logged 142.9 (X1000) counts, for 14,290 CPM, both over a 10 minute time period. Note that the EXP+ only has four active digits on its display, and has to illuminate the "X 1000" multiplier.

To conclude this review, I have to say it is a very clean looking, well built, user friendly Geiger counter with all the bells and whistles I could ever want and more. If you are considering the purchase of a Geiger counter for emergencies, checking for contamination in food and water, or to experiment with the things around you, I would strongly recommend you give this one a close look. It has so many more features than its competition.

Product Description

The Oreck Commercial 550MC Orbiter floor machine is a floor buffer with an orbital drive and a finger control that is used for cleaning wood, vinyl, tile, and other hard floors and for dry-cleaning and loosening dirt from carpeted floors. The orbital drive oscillates the 12-inch brush or pad (sold separately) on the bottom at up to 175 revolutions per minute (RPM) to buff, clean, polish, sand, scrub, strip, or wax floors without making the machine twist or creating swirl marks or gouges. A 50-foot power cord enables the floor machine to cover a larger area without changing outlets than machines with shorter cords. The machine weighs 24 pounds and has a 13-inch-wide cleaning path and a 3/4-horsepower, 5.4-amp motor. It is suitable for use with various accessories including brushes, pads, bonnets, shampoos, and cleaning solutions (sold separately).

Oreck Commercial manufactures a variety of vacuums, floor machines, power sweepers, air purifiers, chemical cleaners, and related accessories. The company, founded in 1963, is headquartered in Plymouth, MA.

Oreck Commercial 550MC Orbiter Floor Machine, 13" Cleaning Path, 50' Cord Review

If you are considering this model vs. the ultra orbiter, keep in mind that the commercial 550MC unit also has a 1/2 horsepower motor despite the Amazon description which indicates that it has a 3/4 hp motor. This can be confirmed by contacting Oreck. It appears that the cord on the commercial model is longer but that the orbiter ultra has a longer warranty. The 550MC commercial model comes with a black mounting pad which is essential for use of accessories. Accessories are available at additional cost.
The machine is a pleasure to use. It is easy to control and has plenty of power. I cleaned my vinyl floor and also a good portion of my wood dining room floor. I was satisfied with the results.
The ultra model appears to be so similar to the commercial model that I think either would be fine. I did think I was getting a more powerful motor when I placed my order but there is little to go wrong with this device necessitating a 10 year warranty (applicable to the ultra unit) so I don't regret my purchase. Oreck customer phone service is not outsourced and the people I spoke to were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
I have yet to try to clean tile so I can't comment on this. I have no plans to use the machine to clean carpet as I have a carpet cleaner which uses detergent.
Addendum:
Despite the information provided by Orek's customer service to the contrary it appears that this unit really does have a 3/4 h.p. motor. I am happy to hear this since it still can be used with any standard 15 amp outlet. I have used this floor machine several times since purchase on sheet vinyl and wood and I have no regrets. It is a fine machine.

Grizzly G8689 Mini Milling Machine Review

As noted by a previous reviewer, this same model (all made by Sieg in China) are available from a variety of sources. I purchased mine from Grizzly, largely because of the support that Grizzly provides. If I were to purchase this same milling machine again, I would probably go with Micro-Mark which is about the same price. The big difference is that the Grizzly version uses 0.060"/turn on the x and y axis and 0.0625"/turn on the Z-axis, while the Micro-Mark uses 0.050"/turn on all axis. It's a lot easier to dial in, say a 0.384 movement at 0.050"/turn than it is to divide 0.0625 into 0.384 to determine the number of full turns and the add'l thousands needed to hit 0.384 exactly.

Anyone considering a small milling machine probably knows that you'll spend nearly as much on tooling as the initial purchase price of the mill. With this mill, plan on additional purchases of a belt drive kit ($120)to replace the noisey, failure prone gear train and an air spring kit ($40)to replace the cheesey torsion spring mechanism. Without the air spring kit, the mill head will occasionally drop 50 thou or so, resulting in an undesired gouge in your work piece. Both kits are available from LittleMachineShop.com (an Amazon supplier).

Provided that you don't push it too hard, this little guy will handle machining of small steel, brass, aluminum, delrin, etc. work pieces with accuracy of +/- a few thou. To do that, however, plan on investing a considerable amount of time on tuning the machine by polishing and adjusting the gibbs and tweaking the nuts on the lead screws to minimize backlash. Besides improving the performance of the machine, this tuning will improve your understanding of how all the pieces fit together to perform the milling function.

CarveWright CW005 Version C Woodworking System Review

This is going to be a balanced review. Clearly, reading the other reviews, everyone either loves or hates the Carvewright. I will say that it is not problem free, that you (as owner) will need to learn some new tricks. But that doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile.

The Carvewright machine ties in with its software. The software is easy to use to do simple projects, but there are depths within depths in that software. To create complex patterns or projects, you will need to take time to learn to use the software. Carvewright maintains a very active and engaged forum, one that you will go to probably with every project and problem. There is a learning curve to using this system and much of the learning needed will come from other users. (Thanks, Bud, btw) There's tutorials online. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you'll muddle through and figure out the software as you go. Its too complex for that. But it is cool and you can do some pretty amazing things with it; you just need to learn how.

Upon purchase, I had to wait several weeks for the machine to arrive. The company seems to sometimes be backordered as the machines themselves are heavy, bulky and expensive. Once it arrived, it was very simple to put together and I was (and am still) pleased that it came well tuned right out of the box.

The first project that I did was a simple one, a variation on one of the tutorials on the system. It came out beautifully, though it was simple. It was a pattern, with words in a single plane that was carved from the surface of a board. I was ready for more complexity.

Unfortunately, I had a tough time. The next 6 carves didn't work out for a lot of reasons. Almost all of those reasons were operator error. I had to learn and now that I have, I see the mistakes I made. The good news is that I don't think I made the same mistake twice. In one instance, the flexshaft that drives the bit melted but I believe that is because it was not inserted completely into the rig. Again, operator error.

The projects I'm doing now are coming out beautifully. I'm using very complex patterns and am in process of carving a large gothic bed. I will post pictures when I'm done.

So, if you are considering, be prepared to learn. It is NOT boring and it is cool as heck, but you may experience some level of frustration. A number of the other reviews on this board seem very frustrated. This is not an Apple product. it is not user friendly, it is a tool that can do a lot but you have to learn to use it right.

Last, not least, this machine is LOUD. It makes a lot of noise (particularly if the muffler falls off the back). What's more, you cannot leave it unattended for very long. There was a case of someone on the forum that left it for a couple of hours and found that it started a fire in his shed. I have it in a back room in the basement and when its one, I can hear it three floors above. When I'm carving, I let it roll for an hour or so, go back and double check it. I also bought two smoke detectors that I keep close to the machine.

Be ready for loud. But also be ready for something very cool that will let you build all those amazing projects you've been thinking about for years! As much as I love my Carvewright, I wouldn't want to relive the first couple of weeks all over. If you buy it (or have bought it), prepare for a couple of rough weeks followed by use of a very powerful tool.

Delta 18-900L 18-Inch Laser Drill Press Review

This is my first drill press that I've added to my well equipped wood shop. It was easy to set up. I was able to carry the base, shaft and table by myself. A buddy helped me carry the head to my basement shop. I had it running within minutes. It does not come with a fence. So I ordered the Delta 18-901 24-in Biesemeyer Drill Press Fence The laser was spot on. It also comes with a light that mounts on the left side. When the light is on the laser is very difficult to see. Not a big deal but worth noting.

I really like the 6" quill travel. It runs super smooth. Changing speeds is fast. Pop the lid open, push the handle which losens the tension on the belt, and move the belt then move the handle back. There is a chart glued to the bottom of the lid. Pick the type and size of bit along with the material and you have your needed speed. There is a spot on the right side of the head to put the key chuck. Which helps guys like me who are bad about misplacing tools. I am really impressed by the spindle nuts. They have a side button which allows them to quickly move without turning. Not new to those more knowledgeable about DP's but a nice for me. Machine operates quietly and looks great in my shop with the mobile base HTC HTC2000 Universal Mobile Base Delta supplied all the necessary hex wrenches necessary for assembly.

So far the only problem I've had was the left over locknut after finishing the build. It is around 1/4". ??? Great machine that is probably more than I need. Just don't tell my wife!!
