SX2120 by SurgeX Review

Picked up this unit to protect an audio rack containing a Pro Tools front end, all the outboard EQ, dynamics, mic pres, converters, clocking etc.

The system is dead silent to my ear and measured with a Tektronix DVS 100Mhz oscilloscope.

I can see no ripple or noise in the power and the rig remains stable in an environment with power measured at the outlet that varies from 108 VAC - 132 VAC as measured with a Fluke 8068 digital VTVM.

SurgeX seems to have done a nice job building this unit using high quality resistors, capacitors and diodes.

The solder work is tidy, with no apparent cold joints anywhere.

One item of note for any one considering this unit...

The power cable is hard wired and has a molded dedicated 20 Amp plug.

The lug for the common side of the outlet sits at 90 deg to the lug for the feed side (right side) of the outlet.

You will need an outlet with a 20 Amp receptacle wired in, and this means the outlet must have a 20 amp feed (breaker wired with 12 wire) or you will not be able to plug in and energize the SurgeX SX-2120.

I was not notified of this when I bought the unit, so upon opening the box I learned a trip to the hardware store was in order.

Good thing I have built recording studios for many years and worked for a licenced electrician as well.

The SurgeX SX-2120 gets a thumbs up from me!

The Instek GOS-6103 is a 100MHz, two-channel portable analog oscilloscope with a timebase auto-range function, delayed sweep mode, seven cursor measurements, storage for ten user-defined settings, Z-axis input, TV synchronization capability, trigger signal output, and high- and low-frequency rejection circuits for electronics applications such as product design, assembly lines, repair and servicing, and electrical engineering education, among others. The timebase auto-range function automatically selects the optimum sweep time for displaying waveforms. The oscilloscope has a standard sweep and a delayed sweep that can horizontally magnify any portion of a complex waveform for inspection. Seven cursor readout measurements—voltage difference, voltage difference percentage, voltage gain, time difference, time difference percentage, frequency, and phase—allow analysis of waveforms. Ten user-defined instrument settings can be saved and recalled. The Z-axis input modulates the intensity of the waveform and the TV synchronization circuit allows triggering of TV-V and TV-H signals. The trigger signal output can be connected to a frequency counter or other device (sold separately). High- and low-frequency rejection circuits remove interference from a signal to prevent false triggering. To protect settings against inadvertent changes, the control panel can be locked. Additional specifications include a rise time of 3.5ns (17.5ns at 2mV per division) and various triggering features. The oscilloscope has a 6" CRT (cathode ray tube) display with an internal 8 x 10 division grid (each division is 1 cm) for viewing waveforms. It meets European Standard (EN) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61010-1 safety standard, and is rated for CAT (category) II installations to 400V, which covers energy-consuming equipment connected to a fixed installation, including household, office, and laboratory appliances. GW Instek GOS-6103 Portable Analog Oscilloscope with 2 Channel, 100MHz Bandwidth, 16kV Accelerating Potential Review

The problem with this oscilloscope is the performance/cost ratio. It works as it should but, for about the same money, digital oscilloscopes are now available that make it look like a poor choice.

Not too long ago it was advantageous to have a true phosphor (CRT) scope. One example is that CRT scopes show more intensity on the screen for signal segments that occur more often. This is an advantage for waveforms such as amplitude modulation. Now, with digital phosphor scopes, the advantage has mostly evaporated.

Another problem is the user manual ... too brief to explain confusing issues that can occur when using the scope. As an example, the scope can become non-responsive with certain button presses. There is no troubleshooting section.

If you really need a CRT scope, a four-star rating would be appropriate.
