South Bend Lathe SB1001 8K - 8-Inch by 18-Inch Bench Lathe Review

Just ordered and received the SB1001 lathe and overall I am happy with most of the features. It was delivered with no damage and the overall appearance of the machine looks great. Runs quite and smooth. Have only used it to machined a couple of small parts out of brass and aluminum. Went well but I'll save that detailed review for another time.

There are a few things that need improvement as follows.

D1-3 3 jaw chuck does not mount flush to the back plate. Had to shim interface for proper concentricity. Is still out by .003" TIR.
I will need to re-machine alignment hub to fix the problem.

Chuck thru bore is .8". Grizzly ads says spindle bore is 1.125" Very mis-leading. Will need larger chuck to pass material thru spindle. About $500 bucks.

Had to grind one of the outer grip jaw grooves to get it to fit chuck.

Tool post crank handle hits cross slide table if aligned over.

BenchPro RD2472 Roosevelt Heavy Duty Steel Electronic Work Station with ESD/Static Control Top, 1600 lbs Capacity, 72" Width x 30-36" Height x 24" Depth Review

Shipping was timely. The bench was easy to assemble. The top is very solid, with a U-beam support underneath--no sag at all, even on the 72" model. Front edge is rounded which is very nice.

The minimum height is 33", not 30", even with the feet at their minimum extension. There is another height adjustment hole for 30" but I found that it wasn't usable because of how the legs are machined. But 33" seems perfect for how I use it, which is for electronics hobby work at home.

I hung a 48" florescent fixture with two 32-watt T8 bulbs from the ceiling over the bench and it lights the whole surface nicely.

I used this for a grounding lug on a welding table I built. Price was reasonable, quality is good. Did have a couple nicks on it so if you need a smooth clean surface you might have to machine it, sand and polish for a mirror finish.
