MINI PAK'R Air Cushion Machine Review

Wonderful invention, reliable ... just the ticket for a tiny business.

Every day, I mail between 2 and 10 packages of glassware. Each box is about 10x10x10 inches and, naturally, I worry about each package.

For ten years, I used packing peanuts. I'd run through a bag of peanuts every week, so I'd buy 4 to 6 bags at a time. Oh, how these took up space (and what a mess around the house - squashed peanuts underfoot)

After realizing that my home business wasn't going away (it's now my 15th year!), I invested in a mini pak'r air-pillow machine. Happy? You bet! No more packing peanuts!

Since my glassware is delicate, I make sure there are pillows on all sides (no glassware touching the wall of the cardboard box). The 4x8 inch pillows work perfectly for my operation; the weight of the pillows is slightly less than the equivalent mass of peanuts. (The cost per cubic foot of air-pillows works out to be almost twice the cost of the cheapest packing peanuts, but this is trivial since postage swamps the packing cost)

Packing my glassware goes faster with the air-pillows, since it's easy to tear off the right number of pillows and wrap 'em around the bottle. I make sure that there is always at least one inch between the glass and the inside edge of the box. However, I do not stuff the box completely with air-pillows, to give room to expand when the air pressure changes (see below). The mini packer machine lets you adjust the amount of air in each pillow; I've never played with this. You can also set the length of the string of airpillows that come out each time you press the green button; I've set this to 7 feet. You can also change the sealing heat, but I've never bothered.

The 4x8 inch film inflates to form pillows that are about 2.5 inches thick and around 6 inches long. Five of them fit into a 6x4x4 inch box.

Oh - this is important: Since the air-pillows are sealed air balloons, they will expand when taken up in an airplane. Since many of my shipments go by air, I deliberately do not completely fill the box with air pillows. Instead, I leave a bit of room for the air pillows to expand. Not enough to rattle, but a smidgen less than completely full. After a year of using the mini pak'r, I've had exactly zero broken shipments (which is the same as when I used packing peanuts). So these things work well.

I mounted the machine on the wall, using a few screws (there's a wall-mounting device available, but I didn't want to spend $100, so I just bolted a piece of plywood to the machine, and then screwed the plywood to my wall). When wall-mounted, the machine is especially nice, since it swallows no table space, and the air pillows wind up right where I want 'em. The machine eats about 4 watts in standby, 30 to 50 watts when ready for action, and around 200 watts while heating up.

There are several sources for the air-pillow film; use your favorite search engine to find a supplier (I purchase about 10 or 12 rolls at a time from Uline). Be careful, however - make sure the film is compatible with the mini-packer.

A few downsides: The green and red buttons are a bit cheezy - after a year, the green button is showing cracks. Also, I cannot find any biodegradable air pillow film (the green tinted kind), but I understand that this may be due to my living in California. I (and my customers) care about minimizing plastics in landfills.

Conclusion: this is an ideal machine for the small business. When wall mounted, it takes minimal room, and saves so much room compared with packing peanuts.

This company has the best customer service I have ever received on Amazon.com. If I were to buy something else on Amazon I wish it was from this company. They worked with me to resolve the issue I had with the machine by providing two hoses to use on the machine. However I don't particularly feel that this machine offers what I thought it would offer and and would have rather purchased something else. However If you have don't your research and know this is the machine for you. THIS IS THE BEST COMPANY TO ORDER THE MACHINE FROM!

I bought this machine less then a month ago, was allured by the promise of a convinent, clean countertop machine. I thought great i just tap a button and alkaline water comes out on the top perfect, when i want acid water it will come out on the botton, perfect!

Problem is, if i want to fill my sink with acid water to disinfect my produce both acid water and alkaline water pour down! If i want alkaline water both acid water and alkaline water come out! So unless i want to fill up a tub (alkaline water comes out about twice the speed acid water does) with alkaline water while my sink gets full then im stuck with alkaline water all the time!

The genius who designed this didnt think of an off/on switch for the two faucets! Turning the faucets left or right as the company tells you still leaves me in the same sink area!

Waste of water and waste of money! Stick with the clutter its more convenient and u waste less water!

This machine is a rip off! Unless they develop an on/off switch for this model you waste tooo much water trying to fill a sink with acid water!

P.s. after you push the off button the machine turns on after 10 sec again then after 10sec turns off again! So more wasted water!

Martin 692K 25 Piece Body and Fender Repair Tool Set Review

Perfectly weighted hammers, the dollies look like jewelery, and the set is built for a lifetime of use. This beautiful set is one I could hand down to my kid. I haven't used everything in the set, but what I have used is simply above reproach. This is a set for any gearhead looking to buy the best, who understands that quality tools make one's work both easier AND better.

I have read some complaints about the book "The Key to Metal Bumping" because they feel it's out-of-date. I disagree completely, even though it's a very old book, originally dating back to the '30s. It would be nice if it was a bit larger, but most of what one will learn about that skill will be learned hands-on, and no book can teach you that.

The title I gave this review would seem the price is a negative, but it's not. Either you value quality tools made in the USA by people making a fair wage, or you don't. I do value that greatly, so I see that as the cost of doing business. If I had one negative thing to say about it, it's that the toolbox (a Waterloo) is made in China. However, the box seems very well made.

South Bend Lathe SB1002 10K - 10-Inch by 28-Inch Bench Lathe Review

The South Bend lathes, for a century, and particularly the 9" models have been such a successful design that copies of it have been made all over the world. I have owned and run a 9" South Bend Mod A lathe for twenty years. I needed larger swing capacity for more products.
Like most people, of course I had a budget.
this is not a SB Fanboy rave. Because it was not made in South Bend, I approached it with suspicion and apprehension, especially seeing certain budget lathes in a local showroom (And getting asked to leave).

OK, Cosmoline Cleaning observations:
This is a South Bend. Users of the 9's, the Heavy 10's, and the 10K's will automatically reach for the feed clutch, change box, feed direction levers, by instinct.
A Meehanite casting with hardened bedways. Saddle and compound ways are scraped, the bedway V's are "Precision ground". We'll see about that when critical parts are made.
Tomorrow it will be leveled, bolted, and the Breakin procedure for the gears and bearings will be run.
Now, remembering I have seen new machinery come into my employer's shops for many decades, and not just because it's my new lathe, what's the Form, Fit and Finish?
It's beautiful.

Normally, when I buy a tool, I'll tell it, "OK. I paid for you, and you are going to WORK like a rented mule!".

This is the first time I ever bought a tool where I thought, "Am I good enough to deserve this?"

I could have paid $2,000 less for a 10" lathe. There are some on here, and many on the web. Read the metalworking forums and newsgroups, and do your homework. Your needs may be different from mine. If budget is really an issue, there are plenty of used machines, around, also.

Next Day:

How does it run? OK I have the nuisance of changing all my chucks and tooling over to the D1-3 Camlock system. Not really a big deal, and it is a better mounting system than the usual 1 1/2-8 screw-on. Now, cutting in reverse with a rear mounted tool will not unscrew the chuck.
There is no conventional back gear, but the poly-V drive has a wide range of reductions. The chuck as supplied had no detectable runout with a Mitutoyo dial indicator.
It comes with a quad tool holder. Nice, but a nuisance to shim all the heights. I am moving my Aloris post over to it, anyway. The spindle has precision tapered roller bearings. No more end float, and perfect large facing finishes now.

Whines:
1) Does not come with tailstock chuck.
2) Ball oiler was missing on feedscrew bearing. $2. All the earlier SBs had a little open hole, anyway, but...
3) Humungous, Monster cast iron motor the size of a watermelon, that hums. Physically huge and heavy for a measly One Horsepower. Why? Ballast?

EDIT: 2 Weeks Later: Operating experience.

Crossfeed backlash: Less than 0.0026 measured by DRO. Typical max spec is 0.005. Adjustable to ZERO but not recommended by Mfr. I believe it is a ball nut.
OEM Chuck test: Turn, flip, rechuck, turn. Better than 0.0005 TIR.(!) That doesn't happen often! Never, to my memory.
FACING LARGE FLAT. 8" Diameter: Less than 0.0015 Plane/Parallel both sides. Flatness Slightly better than 0.001 center to edge.
LONGITUDINAL TAPER TEST: Required headstock truing. Now ~0.0003/Foot, and I know I can get it better. Jacking screws on Headstock mount make it easy, if not a little tedious.
Heavy, heavy headstock probably shifted in rough transit.

Delivery: Pilot. Prompt, friendly, offered to help. Manly pride and excitement got it the way, and I had a travel crane anyway.
This thing is HEAVY. Be safe when moving and installing. It is top heavy, and you will need equipment, or the better part of the local biker gang.
The unit comes fully crated. You will need a neighbor with a fireplace or woodstove to get rid of it all.

Price: Research the prices of old lathes..even junk ones found in a barn. This is not an expensive lathe. The extra money spent on this will be forgotten when you run it out of the box versus restoring an old junker like I did, or settling for some strange brand that has not-very-good reviews online.
