Grizzly G1014ZX Combination Sander with Cabinet Stand Review

I just got the Grizzly G1014ZX after reviewing several different brands. For the price, this is the best combination disc and belt sander on the market.

Like most of Grizzly's products, it is made primarily of cast iron and steel. It's 115 volt single phase 3/4 HP motor, which is a bit smaller than more expensive units, has no trouble sanding down stock. This is probably from the sanding disc being made of cast iron and acting like a flyweight when rotated. I haven't gotten it to bog down yet with anything that I have thrown at it, though I don't have any need to sand down huge pieces of lumber. Set up was a snap. The instructions call for an additional person but I managed to set the unit up by myself and make all the necessary adjustments in about 2 hours. Since the upper sander and base that sit on the cabinet are made of cast iron and are heavy I would advise having help if you don't think you can manage. Like the other Grizzly machines I own, I would consider this to be a good solid product with an affordable price tag.

The only reason I would not give this machine 5 stars is due to a couple of flaws inherent to the machine. First off, the two dust collection ports are different sizes which forces you to purchase additional pieces for hook up. I'm sure this is to maximize draw but still you need additional parts. With a little creative rigging I think I managed to get it to work the best I can though the setup is still not the greatest. Also, converting the table from the horizontal to the vertical requires you loosen two nuts where the belt table attaches to the motor and rotate the table up. This takes about 10 minutes to complete and could be a pain if you frequently need to change the setup. Personally I can't see a fix with ratcheting handles since there is just not enough room for them between the motor housing and the belt.
