This welder is fantastic! There are so many reasons why this is the best welder for the DIY, weekend warrior, light machinist, automotive repairer / restorer / upgrader should check out this welder. Even if you are a professional welder you should check this welder out if you need something compact and all-in-one for your home workshop. It isn't red or blue but it has all of the functions commonly needed for a price that cannot be beat.

Everlast has been in business for close to 10 years now. Their 2013 product lineup shows their maturity in the market and are light years ahead of what they were selling even a few years ago. You cannot beat their 5 year warranty.

I've used mostly Miller welders where I have worked for better than 20 years now and they are great welders but I really didn't want to spend that kind of money for a welder at home. As much as I like Miller arcs I simply could not justify it. Combine that with the fact that I also wanted to buy a plasma cutter and my wallet was screaming for mercy. This welder is DC ONLY. You cannot weld aluminum with it. If you want to get a similar welder with aluminum capability I suggest you look at the 2013 Everlast PowerPro 205S 200a Tig Stick Pulse 50a plasma cutter Multi Process Welder, PowerPro 164 or PowerPro 256 welders. DC only was fine by me and I bought one.

Here are my reasons for buying this welder:

1. Price performance cannot be beat
2. Warranty is outstanding
3. The Everlast forum is very friendly and they are a great help
4. The product is well made and performs well
5. Welder is compact and light

One thing you should keep in mind though is that the welder comes with a water cooled TIG torch so you will need to make or buy a water cooler to use it. Either that or buy an air cooled torch that might have a lower duty cycle.

Material is best quality, cold rolled, mild annealed, sheet steel, free from buckle, loose scale or other surface imperfections. Finish all sheet steel parts are to be thoroughly cleaned before finish is applied. Finish shall be baked on at a temperature of not less than 300 degree fahrenheit and must withstand a rigid hammer test without flaking. The right hand door shall be equipped with a 3-point locking mechanism that engages slots provided in top and bottom cross channels and in left hand door. The locking mechanism consists of the following parts. Locking bars is 18-gauge steel, channel shaped, operating within 18 gauge steel lock bar guides spot welded to top and bottom edge of door, and riveted to locking disc at center of door. Locking disc is 14-gauge steel, punched for attachment of flocking bars and operating handle and flanged approximately 3/8" for lock strike. Locking disc to have extended hooked fingers which engage left hand door when locking disc is in locked position. The right hand door only shall be equipped with a die cast, chrome plated and polished turn handle, which attaches to and operates the locking disc. Pro:

The shelves are in good condition, and seem to be adequately sturdy. Adjustment of shelf height is fairly easy.

Four printer paper boxes fit well side-by-side in the cabinet, if I put the center boxes in last and remove them first. My paper box width includes lids on the bottoms of the boxes, for strength.

The cabinet paint adheres fairly well, holding on in places with minor shipping damage.

Storage cabinets keep dust out and keep stuff out of sight, and typically allow locking. Although I am not too satisfied with this model, I would get metal storage cabinets again.

Con:

The hinges are spot-welded in place, and some are not aligned well. One was far enough out of parallel with the other hinges, that I could not install the door until I cut off part of the hinge with a hacksaw. When I installed the doors on the hinges, I fastened the nuts loosely with my fingers, to reduce stess on the spot-welding.

The shelf brackets are thinner than I would like. The side, back, top, and bottom panels are thin and bend quite easily. The back panels form slots on which the shelves rest, so the thin sheet metal does not give me a good feeling. The thin sheet metal may bend in transit, so the shipper matters. I straightened gentle bends in parts that were supposed to be flat, by using my fingers or by placing the parts on a carpet and stepping on the parts. However, I was unable to straighten parts that were bent on edges, which add rigidity to the sheet metal. I want a cabinet that will remain intact when moved from residence to residence, and will continue to look good enough for use in an office.

The felt dampers intended to keep the door-closing bars from rapping against the door, consist of thin self-stick felt pads about 3/8 inch in diameter. I cleaned the bars in advance, but the pads fell off spontaneously within a few minutes. Not very important, but not impressive.

The top panel is designed to be attached with fewer screws than I would prefer, which I think could allow dust to filter in from above.

Other comments:

Half of the shipping boxes indicated that the product was made in China, for what that info is worth. I don't remember why I thought the product was made in the USA.

If I get more cabinets, I will get them 36 inches wide, rather than 48 inches. The 48-inch cabinets weigh more (unless the metal is thinner) and are harder to move, and the doors stick out farther when open. It may be harder to find wall space against which to locate a 48-inch cabinet. The selection of 48-inch cabinets available for sale is much smaller than the selection of 36-inch cabinets.
