Grizzly H5387 Single-Phase Motor, 3 HP Review

My Grizzly 1023 cabinet saw is nearly 15 years old but has never let me down. I inadvertently burned up the original motor after disassembing the saw for storage and re-assembling several years later. Somehow during re-assembly, the blade was able to be raised high enough to cause the motor shaft to come in contact with the internal height adjustment shaft. Never had that happen in the first 9 years that I owned the saw so not sure how it occurred after re-assembly. Unfortunately, that contact caused considerable friction force on the motor and it burned out within seconds causing a geat deal of smoke and tripping the internal beaker on the switch.

While you can obtain 3hp motors for less money than this one, finding the specific mounting brackets pre-welded to the correct location would be nearly impossible so this replacement motor is necessary unless you're a metal fabricator and master welder. The original motor was very powerfulI and never even broke a sweat when ripping through the hardest of hardwoods or wet PT lumber. The replacement's working great so far and I expect that with my custom made stop preventing future fatal contact between motor and adjustment shaft - this motor will give me the same performance as the original for many years to come.

Did want to mention that while my motor was received in good shape, the packaging was very poor and not suited to the task of protecting a 75 lb. electrical component. Box was badly dented/torn and the very thin styrofoam material inside was destroyed ( I took pictures in the event the motor was inoperative) Fortunatley, after wiring the motor it worked fine so didn't need to file a claim- but the packaging on an item of this weight should be far more substantial.
