The Thermo Scientific Orion Star A329 portable meter with kit displays pH, ISE (ion selective electrode), conductivity, and RDO/DO measurements plus temperature on the large, backlit LCD screen for advanced water testing on location. The display can show each parameter with temperature individually or all three measurements with temperature at once. Electrode status, time, date, sample ID, user ID, and calibration points are also displayed with the measurements. The meter is designed for ease of use and reduced training requirements, with clear screen prompts, updateable soft keys, and an interface that supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Chinese. A pre-programmed auto-read function is available to lock stable readings on the screen, with an indicator alert that signals when the reading is stable. The meter can also be set for timed readings that gather data at specific time intervals. Non-volatile memory holds up to 5,000 data points with time and date stamp. Updates for meter software and complimentary data analysis software are available for download.

The selectable cell constant allows use with two- or four-cell conductivity cells. Practical salinity or natural sea water curves can be selected for salinity readings. Linear or ISO/EN 27888 curves can be selected for total dissolved solids (TDS) readings. pH calibration is available up to five points, with automatic recognition for USA/NIST and DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) buffers. Conductivity calibration has selectable reading reference temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 degrees C with linear, non-linear, nLFu, or EP curve options. Errors can be fixed without a complete recalibration by using the calibration editing function.

DO results are enhanced with automatic temperature, manual salinity, and automatic or manual barometric pressure compensation. DO calibration can be performed with water-saturated air, air-saturated water, zero point, or a custom point with Winkler titration. The RDO luminescent dissolved oxygen probe eliminates changing the membrane with a simple once-a-year cap change. The probe is not affected by color or turbidity, and is suitable for measurements from effluent, aeration basins, and influent.

The meter has an IP 67 rating for protection against dust and short periods of immersion in water. Meter input ports include Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC), reference pin, 8-pin Mini-DIN, and 9-Pin Mini-DIN. Output ports include RS-232 and USB. Certifications for this meter include CE, TÜV, and FCC Class A limits.

I've purchased a number of these meters b/c the combination of high quality pH measurements with luminescent DO technology in one meter is very attractive. Unfortunately the meter still needs some design work to be a worthy competitor as a field meter. The connections for the conductivity and RDO have proven very problematic and I doubt they will last as long as I'd like. Their claim of waterproofing is misleading since the claim requires connections be covered but they provide grossly underdesigned connections and connection covers. The data interface is Hyperterminal text that is ancient and not user friendly--really not appropriate for handling larger data and calibration set logs. If you can keep this meter protected, manage the weak connections, and be patient with the data interface, the technology works well enough to be a valuable meter.
