The Genie GL-8 is a material lift, with a straddle base that adjusts to accommodate loads or fixed objects up to 35" wide, that can be used as a hand truck, forklift, or dolly. The telescoping aluminum frame makes the lift compact and lightweight, while steel forks make the lift more durable. This is a fine tool. Its build is robust, and it is easy to operate. It has a telescoping mast, which is just under six feet high when lowered and a bit over ten feet high when fully raised. A manual winch and a system of pulleys raise and lower the mast smoothly; upper half of the mast slides in grooves in the lower half, and the two parts fit together quite precisely.The machine has hard rubber wheels (preferable to pneumatics, in my view), and a "straddling" base, each arm of which has three independent width settings. The machine is very stable on level surface, but maneuvering the wide base in tight places can be tricky.
The mast can be locked in lowered position and the winch handle stowed; the lift can then be used as a large hand truck or a dolly, since it has a pair of auxiliary wheels on the top of the mast, as well as a padded handlebar. All of the adjustments (base width, fork orientation, mast locking, stowing the winch handle) are done by means of spring-loaded pins and require no tools, which is convenient.
I have used this lift in some large-scale house renovation, and for moving machine tools around the workshop, and it has done everything as promised so far.
The only negative comment that I have is about the packaging: the forklift came in a flimsy cardboard box, completely inadequate for its weight and size. I gave Amazon a black eye rating for this, and I hope that they will pay attention.
