Weller WR3M 120v/400w Digital Self-Contained 3-Function Rework Station Review

This is a very high-end rework station. This is just the base unit, it doesn't come with any tools. If you want the unit with tools included, look at the Weller WR3000M package. With the bare WR3M you'll need to buy the tools separately, so the total cost could rise very quickly.

The WR3M base station is a 3-in-1 system in a compact package, providing power and air to all of your tools: soldering tool, hot-air tool and a desoldering tool. In addition it has the ability to have a vacuum pick up tool, which is pretty cool. You switch between the desoldering and vacuum pick-up tool by rotating the air selector under tool number 3.

One advantage of buying the tools separately is that you get to choose the tools you want. In my case I wanted the WMRP tool with the RT tips. This tool stays pretty cool in its holder, and heats up rapidly when you take it out of the holder to solder. This is possible because only the tip heats up, and the tips are the smallest ones available.

The documentation is somewhat lacking. The manual is translated in lots of languages, but very little is explained about the included accessories. Included in box I got a crappy retractable USB cable which I ended up throwing away. There are a bunch of air nozzle adapters which did not seem to work with the tools I got. The box contains 6 air filters but nowhere in the documentation is it explained how to change them. You do this by turning the Air and/or Vac air nozzles on the WR3M about 30 degrees counter-clockwise, and then pull. This provides access to the air filters. These need to be changed regularly otherwise the base unit can get damaged.

As of this writing, the online video on Weller's website is just pure marketing. Judging by its content, the makers were influenced by Matrix Reloaded, which is cool, but devoid of any content. It's hard to understand which tools you need and what is the difference between similar tools accomplishing the same task. As an example, I spent a lot of time to no avail trying to understand what's the difference between the two desoldering tools, besides a minor difference in price.

The included CD provides Windows software to connect your computer to the WR3M base unit. It allows you to monitor the unit as well as update the hardware's firmware. The software is Windows only, which I ran on Windows XP under Parallels on MacOS X 10.6. It may be my setup, but the software is not able to detect the base unit and connect to it. I couldn't find any online download for the software, so I may be stuck with whatever firmware I currently have installed on the unit.

The WR3M is really pricey. When you add in the separate tools, you can easily spend $2,000 or more on a competent package. To be sure, it's a very nice tool to work with, but may be hard to justify to the average hobbyist working with small SMD components.

Ok guys the instructions are not that clear about how to turn of the equipment, they just say turn clockwise wise for on, and anti-clockwise for off.
