Product Description
Twice life size. Depicting the brain of a right-handed person, contrasting colors and hand-lettered captions locate and identify motor and sensory functional centers, focus on the intellectual role of the dominant left brain, the creative role of the right, and call attention to the emotional, sexual, memory, and learning functions of the limbic system. Sensory regions highlighted include the separate reception and interpretive centers of the visual, acoustic, touch, taste, and olfactory senses, plus sensory centers of the somatosensory cortex receptive to more than 20 specific body regions. Among the motor centers presented are 19 body regions controlled by the motor cortex, the premotor area, and the motor speech area of Broca. More than 120 hand-numbered features are identified in the accompanying key. Divisible into 4 parts, the Giant Functional Brain rests upright on a hoop support on an oval base of finished hardwood. Size, 9 × 8 × 12" (23 × 20 × 30 cm).Denoyer-Geppert Giant Functional Human Brain Model Review
I use this model frequently in my college intro psychology classes. It is a large model, which allows students to see the structures I am discussing while I hold the model. The different structures and areas of the brain are well colored, allowing for easy identification of brain structures. I really like that I can remove part of the spinal cord and limbic system as I lecture; I am able to show the smaller interior structures of the brain in more detail as I discuss these structures while still demonstrating that they are part of the larger brain system. Students enjoy "playing" with this model during lecture and after class; I can pass around the left hemisphere (it stays together) while I continue to discuss the interior structures of the brain with the right hemisphere (it divides into sections). The model is well-labelled on the outside but could be better labelled inside.I really appreciate that this model doesn't come apart into too many different sections. I have used models that have more separate pieces, and have found them difficult to put back together while lecturing.
The sections of this model do fit tightly together; at first that can be difficult, esp while in lecture. Over time, the model loosens slightly, making the model just right. The model is solidly made, and I and my co-workers have used it for several years now. The model has held up very well.
My only complaint is that the model's stand is made of cheap, hard hollow plastic; it broke easily. This hasn't been a big deal, but the manufacturer should make a better stand for the model.
