I have a handful of rental properties. I got this for doing interior demolition of a basement slab so I could get to the main sewer line to replace it with PVC after the clay pipe had collapsed. This one job paid for the tool. It can go through slabs, foundation walls, concrete steps, anything.

It's 80lbs. It uses jackhammer bits that are about $20 a piece. Use anti-vibration gloves which are about $50 for a pair or your nerves and joints can be damaged. Prolonged use even with gloves will cause damage. When I use it I take frequent breaks. To say it goes faster than a sledge hammer would be an understatement, and it can do things a sledge cant. You can basically use the weight of the tool to break concrete into rubble in minutes.

If you use an pneumatic jackhammer you need a massive air compressor on-site, which is a pain in the butt.

Another use of this is installing french drains with submersible pumps in basements where the water table is high.

Doing any kind of work under a slab in a house requires a jackhammer unfortunately.

Very cool to have this tool in my arsenal. To be honest I don't really need it anymore since I'm not a contractor, but it's kind of like keeping a bazooka in my garage, never know when you'll need it. Concrete has a short life span.

Warning!

There is less than 1" working distance when using at the highest magnification (180x). Because of this it is impossible to use the 144-LED light at this magnification. This combination should not be sold together.

The only way to get 8" working distance with this setup is by using the 0.5x barlow reducing the maximum magnification range to 7x-45x (0.7x-4.5x objective x 20x eyepiece x 0.5x barlow).

A better setup for 180x would be a 0.7x-9.0x objective with 20x eyepiece and no barlow. This will give a range of 14x-180x with a working distance of 4".

The company was very friendly, confirmed all this information, and admitted their error. However the ad remains unchanged.

Makita DA6300 7.5 Amp 1/2-Inch Joist and Stud Drill Review

I am an Electrical Contractor. Primarily new residential work. Ive been drilling studs, beams, etc.. etc. for years and there is no Rigid, Milwaukee, or any other manufacturer that can build a hole hawg that comes anywhere close to this drill. I use 7/8 ship augers on high speed all day long, and 1-1/2 self feeding bits ( plumbers bit) on high speed as well and can drill out a house twice as fast as any competitor. i do recommend replacing brushes every 25 homes or so, keeping a spare handle and spare chuck key on hand. The Makita chucks only fit makitas, and the handle will break if dropped hard enough on it. However having it made with plastic is a safety feature. Id rather have the handle break than my wrist break! Anyways people, throw those Milwaukee hole shooters and hole hawgs away! boo on those things.

It was down to either this or, at around $100 less and with similar ranges and accuracy on paper, a Uni-Trend UT804. Despite the price, I am glad I went with this one. Its bright, vivid VFD display won me over as I can see it clearly from across the room at any angle.

The MS8050 is pretty useless for measuring capacitance less than 100nf, and the PC software that it comes with it pretty basic and plots a red line on a teal background which is about the worst color combination to see in the world. All other measurements from it have been quite satisfactory. It's a nice solid unit I plan to use for many years.

I bought the Hilti SFC 18a from the Home Depot about a year ago and I am very impressed. This drill does just about everything I could ever hope it would. The batteries last me weeks without charging and the state of charge indicator on the back of the batteries let me know how much juice i have left. I remember right after i bought this drill, i brought it to help my buddy install a server box. He was putting in lag bolts through studs and his full sized dewalt just didnt have the torque needed. My Hilti on the other hand, drove those lags in with ease. A month later, my buddy got a hilti and is hooked. I also really like the peace of mind knowing that this tool and it's batteries are fully covered under the warranty. Even if i drop it from a roof and it cracks, i can simply take it to my home depot Hilti rep and he will fix it or replace it for free. Powermatic 1791250 Model 1632 16-Inch 5 Horsepower Open End Belt Sander, 230-Volt 1 Phase Review

This open ended wide belt sander is a real gem of a machine. It's a tremendous upgrade from any drum sander. You can easily change sanding belts/grits quicker than 48" wide belt machine or any drum sander. The sanding belt guide system works well and acts as an oscillator to minimize scratch patterns. The 5 HP belt drive powers through just about anything but it's not a planer.

I compared this machine side by side with similar bargain brands and noted considerable differences. Powermatic pneumatic and electrical systems are first class. The belt roller support bearings are larger and can be greased. The table raise/lower is extremely accurate with a double reduction jack that moves the table only .014 per handle rotation. I have made veneer as thin as .030 thick +/- .005 tolerances. Other brands use a single reduction lifts that raise/lower approximately .120 per handle rotation. I am not sure how accurate or repeatable those other sanders are but the Powermatic is right on. Some of the bargain brands use a short length belt with a single contract point roller, that can lead to wood burning and belt filling/plugging like a drum sander. The Powermatic uses a shoe just like the expensive 48" models. I have yet to burn wood or plug the belt on this Powermatic

The optional digital readout helps get you to size fast but it is pricey. You may be able to find an after market digital thickness gauge for less. When you are close to the final size, send the board through the machine a couple times without raising the table height anymore. That works with any drum sander too.

I have used it for 5 years without problems. I added a Delta mobile base and replaced the front lift wheel with an angle iron to connect the lift/trolley from my Laguna bandsaw. I can easily move the sander into the middle of the shop to handle long broads. I also 3/8" tapped the end of the table lift hand wheel shaft and locked in a bolt, which lets me quickly raise/lower the table with a small impact driver. This is not the safest thing to do but I am a one man shop and very careful not to get it moving too fast.

One word of caution when changing the belt, make sure to get the sanding belt in between the guide control fork in the rear of the machine. Failure to position it right will destroy a belt in seconds. Don't be in a hurry, open the back of the machine and double check it!

B&K Precision 886 Synthesized In-Circuit LCR/ESR Meter with SMD Probe, 100kHz Max Test Frequency Review

As a long time electronics hobbyist, I wanted a first-class LCR meter for xmas. Well, I couldn't affort a first-class meter, that would cost thousands of dollars. The 886 looked like the next best thing.

For the money, it works pretty well. I can now tell the C0G caps from the X7R caps by dissipation factor. OK, it would make more sense to just buy new ones but...

Accuracy seems to be at least as good as advertised. I found some Mylar caps in one of my various junk boxes marked +-0.5%. The meter measured them to be within that accuracy!

The meter is not perfect. The ohms function is not really usefull. Any really good DMM (like my Fluke 189) will do ohms better.

Beware, every once in a while the meter will lock up and you will have cycle the power. It doesn't happen often.
The meter has a two-point cal system, OPEN with all inputs open, and SHORTED with a special shorting "bar" installed. The meter sometimes gets confused which mode it's in and you will get a bad calibration. If that happens, cycle the power and repeat the calibration.
