Product Description

Norton Metalite R228 durable, large-diameter, cotton-backed discs are suitable for dimensioning and finishing metals and wood. These discs have no center hole for full-face usage. Pressure sensitive adhesive sticks when pressure is applied, without messing with solvents, water, or heat.

Coated abrasives have individual abrasive grains spaced at a predetermined distance from one another. This is a closed-coat disc. A closed-coat covers 100 percent of the surface with abrasive grains, for more stiffness and better surface finish than an equivalent open coat, where abrasive grit covers 50 to 70 percent of the surface. The cloth backing is stiffer, tougher, and thicker than a paper or film backing. Cloth resists tearing while bending and flexing during use. Use with molded rubber back-up pads, using a hard pad for aggressive cutting, a medium pad for general purpose applications, or a soft pad for contours and fine finishing work.

Aluminum oxide is a widely used and versatile abrasive material. It is a tough, fracture- and wear-resistant grit that works well with a broad range of materials, from metals to wood. Aluminum oxide is more durable than silicon carbide and often used for material removal and finishing.

Abrasives are used for a variety of applications from shaping a part to fine finishing, depending on the grit size. Low grit numbers like 40 are coarse and are used for removing excess material and shaping a part. High grit numbers like 400 are fine and help to create a smooth surface finish. Abrasives, because they use many small cutting particles, provide more controlled material removal and better surface finish than cutting tools like end mills and saws, but do not operate as quickly.

Looks like I bought these discs just in time, as the price more than tripled when I went back
to do this review.
The PSA is very sticky, so I have never had a problem with not enough adhesive as another reviewer has
stated.
Clean your metal disk of all old glue, center and install the disc, turn the machine on and press a piece
of wood in the center and slowly run it out to the edge heating up the material as you go.
If you follow this procedure, you should not have any problems, other than cleaning up the large amount of saw
dust that you will get from a new 36 grit disc.
